Carnivalesque: 50 Shades....

It's the talk of the town - Fifty Shades of Grey - the new book on the shelf that's generating a lot of buzz! We're all gathering at Joanne's place today to talk about erotica writing: Considering the success of the Fifty Shades of Grey series, would you consider writing erotica? If yes, just how hot (or kinky) would you go? The usual gang (Jana Richards, Hayley Lavik, Karyn Good, Joanne Brothwell and myself) are all weighing in. I hope you pop over and check out this week's Carnivalesque: The Travelling Blog Show - with today's topic, it could get hot!!

And since we're talking - have you read Fifty Shades of Grey? Do you plan to read the book? And what are you reading right now? I just finished The Book Thief - loved it!!! Am finishing up a book my friend Brenda recommended called for Younger Next Year Women (some really great advice to staying young and healthy well into your 60s, 70s and beyond). And my friend Ginny has passed on Pillars of the Earth, which I haven't read yet and am looking forward to diving into (can you believe I haven't read that yet?).

Have a great Thursday, People of Blogland :)

  1. I haven't read 50 Shades, and I'm really not planning to. I heard about this one a while back and it just doesn't sound like something I'd want to have floating around up in my head. I'm the person who skims through the regular sex scenes in novels, so the not-so-regular ones are definite flipper-byers. Just not my thing.

Right now, I'm reading the advanced ebook of Rogue's Pawn by Jeffe Kennedy (kind of a modern retelling of The Wizard of Oz combined with Alice in Wonderland - but not really like either). It's got some spicy parts and some squirmy parts that I have to skim past, but I'm really enjoying the story and the plot and the characters. And I'm also reading Transfer of Power by Vince Flynn (political thriller). There's nothing quite like Mitch Rapp saving the world from terrorists. :happy sigh:

Oooo, Pillars of Earth. Loved it. A definite break from Ken Follett's usual political thrillers, but well worth the read. That man's a genius.

    1. Yeah, I'm not going to read it, either, B.E. - as I said on Joanne's blog it's just not my cup of tea!

Rogue's Pawn sounds interesting. I'll google it and see what it's all about. Did you ever read Wicked? I think it was a retelling of The Wizard of Oz that eventually was made into a Broadway production. Always wanted to read that - hmmm, must check the library and see if they have it.

Not much on political thrillers - The Husband likes them, though, so I'm taking the name of the author and adding it to his list of books to be read (I'm generous like that ;)

I'll let you know what I think of Pillars (I have a feeling I'll be itching to write more medieval as I get into it).

  2. I'm sure the book you're hiding under your bed is better than Fifty Shades - judging by the reviews on Amazon.

Needless to say, I don't think I'll be reading it any time soon. Ha!

I do like to read about sex - but good, realistic sex between grown-ups who live in the real world.

    1. Hey, Janice - yes, 50 Shades has had its share of reviews from one end of the spectrum to the other! The reviews have influenced me somewhat - but the book just isn't something I would read anyway (hype or no hype), so I'll be taking a pass, too.

As I said on Joanne's blog - sex has to make sense in the story line, and it has to be about the characters motivations and growth. Funny - I actually edited out two sex scenes in Lady Bells because it didn't jive with the characters' personalities or their individual stories.

  3. I haven't read it yet, but I hope to. My girlfriend is reading it now, so I'm in line. I certainly don't expect to find anything of literary value in the book, but a good "bodice ripper" every now and then does this single girl good!

    1. I think you're coming at it the right way, Sandy - an entertaining read. I believe a lot of the buzz generated was concerning the writing, not the story, and I believe Ms James admits that she is not the best writer...but she obviously can sure tell a story based on the bestselling status!

Enjoy the read and next time I see you, I'll ask about the book :)
